Develop strategies for creating inclusive learning environments Collaborate with peers to share ideas and best practices
Over the course of two interactive days, participants will :
Examine how concepts from architecture inspired universal design in education.
Understand the connections between cognitive science and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
Consider three design filters (options, agency, and accessibility) which support learner agency.
Engage with a design process to refine goals, anticipate barriers, and remove those barriers in support of all students.
Become familiar with CAST’s Schoolwide Implementation Criteria and their implications for leadership and systemwide design (with options for those in administrative or leadership roles to consider schoolwide application and systems-level design).
Kim Bane and Jason Hicks, from Pathways to Inclusive Education, are excited to offer Part 1 of their Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Workshop Series, presented in collaboration with AISA and the American International School-Mozambique.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an educational framework rooted in neuroscience and the science of learning. It guides the intentional design of flexible, accessible methods, materials, and environments that anticipate learner variability, minimize barriers, and nurture agency. Grounded in how the brain learns, UDL invites educators to design for the full range of learners from the start, honoring diversity as the norm rather than the exception. This workshop will provide you with practical strategies to create flexible learning environments that can accommodate the diverse needs of all students.
Target Audience: Teachers, Teacher Leaders, Learning Support Specialists, Instructional Coaches, Curriculum Leaders, Student Support Services Directors, School Psychologists, and Administrators.

Kim Bane is an international education consultant who, along with her colleagues at Pathways to Inclusive Education, works with schools across the globe to design and implement inclusive educational practices that support the needs of all learners. Kim brings experience, dedication and passion to this work, having successfully collaborated with schools both in the United States and across the Middle East, Africa and Asia to transform the learning experience for students, teachers, and school leaders. Through coaching and consulting, Kim supports school leaders as they strategically navigate this complex organizational change. She guides and provides direct instruction for teachers as they develop their understanding on the critical instructional components and approaches that support inclusive practices such as Universal Design for Learning, the Co-Instructional Cycle (co-teaching), and tiered systems of support (often referred to as MTSS) that address the needs of the whole child.

Using his experience as a social studies teacher, administrator, coach and consultant Jason Hicks collaborates with educators as they aspire to achieve their school’s strategic priorities and evolve professional practice. Over the course of 25 years, he has learned much while working in schools in the United States, India, and the United Arab Emirates; he has also had the good fortune to consult with schools on five continents. Jason pairs his practice with a deep commitment to compassion knowing that each one of us is in a different spot on a unique personal and professional journey. You can often find Jason sitting with a teacher as they are reflecting on a lesson through the lens of Universal Design for Learning, supporting teams as they build their collaborative capacity through the use of Adaptive Schools, or engaged in a coaching conversation with a dedicated educator who is planning a process or reflecting on a recent event.
