This institute will focus on two main areas: Advanced Placement Comparative Government & Politics and Advanced Placement Human Geography.
KEY AUDIENCE: Teachers of AP Government, Politics and Human Geography.
This two day Institute is a great way to refresh subject knowledge and understanding in the company of other subject specialists. With new AP resources and processes coming online for the school year 2019-20, this is a fast and effective way of synthesising what is new and what remains in time to implement any changes. The facilitators are trained College Board experts who are teaching the subject and preparing students for the AP qualification themselves so have many nuts and bolts strategies for the effective teaching of AP for your school.
Dan Hoppe has been teaching AP U.S. Government and Politics and AP Comparative Government since 2008. He has been a social studies teacher in the Stevens Point (WI) school district since 2002 where he also teaches AP U.S. History. Dan has been a test reader and written test questions for the AP Comparative Government exam and is a College Board national consultant for both AP Government courses, presenting workshops to teachers across the nation since 2014. He has also presented workshops on the use of technology within the social studies classroom at the Wisconsin Council for the Social Studies annual conference and for education majors at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Dan was awarded the Coca-Cola Distinguished Educator Award in 2015. He is also an active leader within his school, serving as the student senate advisor and as a track coach.
John Trites has been closely involved with the AP Human geography course since its inception. He was on the original Test Development Committee for 7 years and he has been involved with every examination Reading. At the readings, John has acted as a Reader, Table Leader, and as a Question Leader. He enjoys working with both new and experienced APHG teachers and has conducted numerous weekend and week-long workshops throughout the both the United States and Canada. John taught high school Geography in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia for 33 years. In addition to teaching the APHG course to students in a regular classroom setting, he also taught the course on-line to students in several schools throughout his area. He presently works with pre-service teachers at Acadia University and frequently visits pre-service teachers in other Atlantic Canadian universities.
