Biography

Ann and Charles Olsher are both elementary school teachers at the American International School of Johannesburg. Teaching in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms, they have researched and implemented strategies that help English Language Learners succeed in an academically rigorous environment. Prior to working in international schools both Ann and Charles were English as a Second Language teachers in the Boston Public School system.

Description

English Language Learners are a part of every international school’s community. It is important that we learn how to address their specific needs. In this session we will explore currently researched strategies that have been proven to increase English Language Learners understanding of various curriculum materials through the speaking, reading, writing, and listening of English. The rationale for such strategies and step by step implementation instructions will be shared through interactive activities and discussions. You will also develop skills for planning effective lessons that will increase ELLs involvement in the classroom, vocabulary development, and comprehension skills.

  • Participants will be able to implement researched strategies for effectively teaching English Language Learners how to access academic content in the classroom.
