Biography
Originally from the US, Kristeen has spent most of her professional life living and working in Eastern Africa. Currently the head of Iringa International School in the southern highlands of Tanzania, Kristeen''s experience varies from being a class teacher in primary and secondary, to ESL-Special needs teaching and curriculum coordination. As an IB workshop leader/school visitor for the PYP, Kristeen has worked with many international schools across Africa. She has also worked with local schools and universities in Tanzania combining her main areas of interest, which are language programmes, teacher training, community development and promoting literacy.

Description Learning which is truly meaningful should have an impact beyond the classroom doors. Many international schools include some aspect of active citizenship or creating a better world as part of their mission, but how is this put into practice? In this workshop we will explore how to create an enabling environment and strategies that are more likely to lead to student action. Service learning and other ways in which these strategies and goals can be embedded into the school’s curriculum and practices will also be shared.
Objectives
  1. Strategies to heighten students' awareness and understanding of the communities around them;
  2. Developing students' efficacy (belief in one's own power to make positive change);
  3. Embedding these goals in curriculum and teaching-learning practices.

Description In this workshop we will compare and reflect on teacher-centered vs. student centered language teaching. Teachers will come away with practical strategies for integrating traditional language objectives, such as grammar, into more effective and communicative language lessons.

  2. Participants will learn how to build language goals into communicative tasks;
  3. Participants will come away with ideas for language activities.
