When people ask me what sets AISA apart I can easily answer that it is our community of schools. School leaders, teachers, co-professionals and students find in the AISA community an opportunity to collaborate and learn from each other.
Living and working in Africa presents all sorts of opportunities and challenges that our community shares. AISA provides a valuable point of connection for colleagues throughout our network in Africa – and a much needed link to a variety of professional learning opportunities and Associate member services on offer from around the world. In doing so, AISA brings quality, relevant and up-to-date professional learning to our member schools in Africa.
For me personally, the opportunity to work with an organization as diverse and eclectic as AISA ensures I come to work each day knowing something new will happen. Mostly those new things revolve around our membership and supporting the learning that happens in our schools. Sometimes I find myself involved in the many and varied challenges that our members face as an inevitable part of living and working in this part of the world. Above all it’s the people I meet through my work that really bring meaning and fulfilment to what I do as Executive Director.
This includes the amazing staff we have in the AISA secretariat, to the dedicated Board that guides my decision making, to the collegial relationships with heads of schools who guide learning in their own schools, and the amazing work being done by our teachers as they show true dedication to their students. Seeing the talent of the students themselves as they enter into their academic, cultural, sporting and service learning programmes is truly awe inspiring. I am lucky to see all this in action first hand during my travels across this unique and beautiful continent.

Our schools flourish thanks to the engagement of an amazing group of people all striving for excellence in their work and in their lives. I really do have the best job in the world!
During my school visits across Africa I continue to be amazed by the sheer diversity of our member schools. From our smallest schools in Lomé and Cotonou to our largest schools in Lagos, Johannesburg and Nairobi; be they US curriculum, UK curriculum, IB, IPC, AP or whatever – the thing they all have in common is their clear focus on student learning. However, the diversity of curricula in our schools, the high mobility of our school communities and the uncertain infrastructure, security and political environment in many African countries presents us all with considerable challenges. AISA, thus, seeks to maintain a supportive role on many fronts in order for our school communities to thrive.
Undoubtedly the environment in many parts of Africa requires our schools to become among the most innovative, robust, and resilient international schools in the world. AISA schools embrace the richness of their environment in exceptional and unique ways, always striving for excellence.
